The history of the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier
When explaining the history of the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier the BYTNC, feels that this comes in several sections of the Biewer itself. Starting with the development of the Yorkshire Terrier. The Yorkshire’s origin was in England. The first registration in the stud book of the kennel club was made in 1886.
Born in 1865,Huddersfield Ben is known as the ancestor of all Yorkshire Terriers. He was the result of a precisely planned breeding program.
The breed’s history is incomplete, but it is almost certain that the following dogs, which have become extinct, took part in the Yorkshire Terrier’s development: Waterside Terrier, Clydesdale and Paisley Terriers.
The Biewer (pronounced Bee-vair) Yorkshire a la Pom Pon originated in Hunsruck, Germany in 1984. Werner and Gertrude Biewer started the first Biewer Yorkshire through a gene mutation, also known as a recessive piebald gene, in their Yorkshire Terriers. Although Mr. Werner Biewer passed away in 1997, his legacy lives on through this exquisite rare breed.
Biewer Yorkshires started with the Master parents of the blue & tan sire, “Darling of Friedheck”, the dam, also a blue and tan in color, “Fru Fru of Friedheck”. Both dogs were world youth winners in 1981 at Dortmund. Their marriage brought the first blue-white-gold Biewer Yorkshire, “Schneefl?ckchen of Friedheck”, born January 21st of 1984. (Pictured on left.) Other full siblings include Schneeflocke von Friedheck and Grand Pom Pon born August 27th, 1984
The first Biewers were registered as “wrong colored” Yorkshires and were deemed non-breeding status with the VDH/KFT. Mr. Biewer found the acceptance he was looking for in the Biewers with the ACH, Allgemeiner Club der Hundefreunde Deutschland e.V. in 1989 and the first standard was put in place for the Biewer Yorkshire a la Pom-Pon.
A la Pom-Pon was introduced to the Biewer name when Margot Eskens was presented a platter that held a Biewer puppy as a gift from her husband. The french translation ” a colorful ball of yarn” Their Biewer lived for 16 years.
Werner Biewer introduced the race in the first show ring in 1988
